I cant figure out what triggered off the memory trace regarding the following song. Maybe it has to do with the current heat wave under which New Delhi is smouldering or maybe its the plain rustic tune and the chorus of the song OR speaking the truth - maybe it has to do with the tapori in me.
:-) Yeah I like tapori kind of songs too... in fact, my friends and I have had many a hearty discussions juxtaposed with full throated, gut wrenching, care two hoots for the world and singing, a la cacophonix. (This is a topic for another post with copious comments and everybody's favourite tapori songs)
Coming back to the post - I first heard the song in an over packed, Delhi's dreaded Blue Line bus, in blistering heat, jam packed with people, sweat oozing out of every conceivable body pore, frayed tempers, parched throats and vacant looks.
The song sounded more like a blissful drizzle in the sweltering heat and lifted the spirits up, at least it lifted mine.
The second time I heard the song was when my computer had conked off and I had to visit a nearby CyberCafe. The owner or care taker, a haryanvi guy in his teens, was going berserk DJ'ing his favourite songs in his winamp collection. I dont blame him - music has similar effect on me too.
I must say that subconsciously, I found myself humming the chorus to myself, and in the process, abso-bloody-lutely forgetting to ask either about the song or where I could get a copy of it.
Well without further delay or trying to make it sound more dramatic.
I still dont know who has sung it or what the main lyrics are about, but I am totally hooked on to the chorus which goes as follows ..
पाणी अाली पाणी पया दे
ओ रे छोरी िगव मी वाटर
पाणी अाली पाणी पया दे
ओ रे छोरी िगव मी वाटर
O rey Chori Give me Waater
Paani-Aali Paani Pyaa dey
O rey Chori Give me Waater
Paani-Aali = Water Bearer Girl
Chori = Lass
Paani = Water
Pyaa dey = Get me / Give me a drink
Waater = Water :-)
1) If you can provide the lyrics and, or translation of the song - then either post them in the comments or let me know.
2) I dont know if the song is copyrighted or under free domain.If you can provide info regarding that it will be appreciated so that I can either continue providing it online or delete the link.
3) To the best of my knowledge the song contains no profanity. ( Most Haryanvi songs contain them - so if you dont understand the language, and intend to either download more songs or buy/listen to some, user discretion is advised )
